Till We Have Faces: Asian Social Movement Imagery
2013-2017

"Till We Have Faces: Asian Social Movement Imagery" is a fieldwork-and-documentary research project on Asian social movements, initiated by HUANG Sunquan in late 2013 and built by a joint team of graduate students from the Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art at NKNU (Taiwan) and the School of Inter-Media Art at the China Academy of Art. With seed funding from the inaugural Inter-Asia School grant, the team travelled to over twenty cities across Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and mainland China, interviewing more than a hundred individuals and collectives. After the grant ended, the team continued through self-organised crowdfunding; the core fieldwork phase ran 2013–2015, with exhibitions and publication extending through the 2017 Trouble-Makers exhibition at TheCube Project Space (Taipei) and the imagery publication campaign.

The driving question is plain: words like "people," "the masses," "the public" are too static, too often imposed from outside. Departing from Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt’s Empire trilogy (Empire / Multitude / Commonwealth), the project unfolds "multitude" from a static noun into a verb of collective action. Drawing on Antonio Gramsci and Stuart Hall’s theory of articulation, it treats the articulator as the node where singularities gather into plurality through shared action. The face of the multitude becomes legible only when concrete persons converge for a concrete cause in a concrete moment.

Five exhibitions were produced: Experimental Pedagogy (2013, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou); Inter-Asia Biennale Forum at the 10th Shanghai Biennale (2014, Power Station of Art); Summit of the Articulators (2016, PSA Young Curators Program, Shanghai, in parallel with the Shanghai Biennale); Space Negotiation, the 3rd CAFAM Biennale (2016, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing); and Trouble-Makers (2017, TheCube Project Space, Taipei). Three completed documentaries: Intimate Comrades: The Story of inMediaHK, Damn the Blessings! Taiwan’s Workers’ Band Black Hand Nakasi, and Ammunition Depot of Thought: Leftist Bookstores. In 2016 Huang also delivered a year-long, ten-session lecture series on the multitude at TheCube’s Praxis School (Taipei).
